The Morris Canal opened in 1831 as the first major transportation link in North Jersey. More than 170 years ago, mules on the canal pulled barges carrying coal from Phillipsburg on the Delaware River to Jersey City on the Hudson River. It was a slow trip taking about five days along the 102 mile long waterway. The Canal was closed in 1924 when the railroad proved more economical because it could make the trip in only four hours. |
